There are three different types of tests available for COVID-19 diagnostics:
- Diagnostic tests that include Molecular and Antigen tests detect whether a person is currently infected with Coronavirus.
- Antibody test. Antibody tests detect whether a person has been infected with Coronavirus in the past.
A diagnostic test can show if you have an active COVID-19 disease. There are two types of diagnostic tests that can detect Coronavirus:
- Molecular test or viral test (ex: PCR, LAMP, NAAT test), typically highly accurate nasal or throat swab tests with results available in minutes or days.
- Antigen test usually highly accurate nasal or throat swab test, but negative results often have to be confirmed by another molecular test. Result of those tests can be available in under an hour.
- An antibody test can show if you have immunity to Coronavirus by looking for antibodies that are made by your immune system during while you are sick with COVID-19 disease. It determines if you had past infections with SARS-CoV-2. Antibodies help you fight reinfection with COVID-19, should you become exposed to the virus again. Antibody tests are also known as a serology or blood test, and usually taken by a blood draw or a finger stick with results available same day or in few days. Antibody tests are not used to diagnose an active Coronavirus infection because antibodies can take days and, sometimes, weeks to develop after you have an infection. At this time, there is no definitive evidence if presence of COVID-19 antibodies provides full immunity to the Coronavirus in the future.
COVID-19 testing options we offer
We offer multiple testing options, including standard RT-PCR tests, Rapid PCR tests, Rapid Antigen tests and antibody testing. Along with testing our clients individually, we offer testing for businesses, events or productions.
RT-PCR tests continue to be “the gold standard” for clinical diagnostic detection of Coronavirus decease. They allow an additional step in the detection of the virus genetic material and are highly sensitive and specific. PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests are relatively simple and widely used molecular technique to amplify and detect the virus. When compared to the standard RT-PCR tests, PCR sequencing can be done in few hours, while still having a high level of sensitivity and specificity.
On the other hand, the Antigen tests are usually less sensitive than the PCR tests, but they are very helpful if a person is tested at an early stage of COVID-19 infection – within 5 days of symptom onset, when the viral load is typically very high. They are typically less expensive and would be most suitable in settings where repeat testing is needed.
